As part of the "High Altitude Fruit" project, the variety diversity of apples and pears is being mapped on farms in the region in cooperation with experts from the University of Natural Resources and Life Sciences. Cuttings from the recorded varieties were taken and subsequently planted and grafted in a "scions garden" on the grounds of the Ötscher Base. The goal is to safeguard and preserve old, well-adapted varieties in the Ötscher region. Numerous apple, pear, and plum varieties suitable for alpine locations have already been recorded. Over 20 courses on pruning old trees and planting campaigns with local varieties have been held for the regional population. This is intended to promote knowledge and cultivation of traditional fruit varieties.
